6 Best Chimney Sweeps in High Wycombe: Local Pros Compared

Open fires need sweeping at least once a year, ideally before the heating season starts. Wood burners and multi-fuel stoves should be swept 1 to 2 times yearly depending on how often you use them. Agas and range cookers vary by appliance; your manual will say. Your sweep can advise on your specific setup.

A CCTV inspection sends a camera up your flue to check for blockages, damage, bird nests or cracks. It costs £100 to £170 and is useful if your chimney draws poorly, you've noticed soot spillage, or you're inheriting an unused chimney. New builds or chimneys you've never used should have one before first use.

A sweep removes soot, tar and debris from inside your flue using rods and brushes or rotary power tools. They'll check for blockages, bird nests or damage, leave your hearth clean, and provide a certificate confirming the work. Most also perform smoke or draw tests to confirm proper function.

Poor draw can stem from a blockage, bird nest, creosote buildup, inadequate chimney height, or air starvation in the room. A professional sweep will diagnose the cause. If sweeping doesn't fix it, a CCTV inspection or smoke test (£45 to £80) helps identify structural or ventilation issues needing further work.

Yes. Most insurers require an annual sweep certificate to validate your claim if fire or damage occurs. Your sweep will issue one after completing the job. Keep it safe and give your insurer a copy if asked.
