Frequently Asked Questions About Chimney Sweeps in Chester

Straight answers to the questions homeowners ask before booking a sweep.

See plans
How often should I have my chimney swept?

Open fires should be swept once a year, ideally before the heating season. Wood burners and multi-fuel stoves need sweeping once or twice yearly depending on how often you use them and what fuel you burn. If you use a range cooker or Aga occasionally, annual sweeping is usually sufficient. Your sweep can advise based on your specific setup.

What is a CCTV chimney inspection?

A CCTV inspection uses a camera fed up your flue to identify blockages, cracks, loose mortar, or bird nests without needing to climb on the roof. It costs £85 to £140 in Chester and is especially useful if you're buying a house, suspect a problem, or haven't used your chimney in years. The sweep provides images or video so you can see what they've found.

Do I need a sweeping certificate?

Yes. A professional sweep should give you a certificate after each visit, confirming they've cleaned your chimney and it's safe to use. This protects you legally and is required by most insurance policies. Always keep your certificates, they're proof of maintenance if you ever need to claim.

What does a bird guard or cowl do?

A bird guard or chimney cowl stops birds, leaves, and rain from entering your flue, which can cause blockages and damp. Installation costs £65 to £140 and is a good investment if you get regular bird nesting or water ingress. Most sweeps can fit one during a visit.

Can I sweep my chimney myself?

DIY sweeping risks incomplete cleaning, missed blockages, and damage to your flue. Professional sweeps have specialist rods, brushes, and training to do the job thoroughly and safely. They also provide a certificate, which you'll need for insurance. It's worth the cost.

What if my chimney is blocked?

A blockage, from bird nests, soot buildup, or debris, must be cleared before you use the chimney. Your sweep will identify the cause during sweeping or inspection and remove it. If a nest is present during nesting season (March to August), removal may need to wait until chicks fledge. Ask your sweep for advice on timing.
