Frequently Asked Questions About Chimney Sweeps in Kendal

Straight answers to the questions homeowners ask before booking a sweep.

See plans
How often should I sweep my chimney?

Open fires and wood burners need sweeping at least once a year, ideally before the heating season. Multi-fuel stoves and range cookers also require annual sweeping. If you burn unseasoned wood or use your fire heavily, twice-yearly sweeping may be wise. A sweep can advise based on what they find.

What does a CCTV chimney inspection show?

CCTV inspection reveals blockages, cracks, missing mortar, bird nests and structural faults inside your flue, problems you cannot see by eye. It gives a clear picture of whether you need repairs or simply a sweep. In Kendal, expect to pay £85 to £140 for this service.

Why is my chimney smoking into the room?

Smoking usually stems from a blockage, a poor draw due to flue design, or inadequate air supply to the room. A smoke or draw test (£40 to £65) diagnoses the cause. Ask your Kendal sweep whether they can perform this test as part of diagnosis.

Can a sweep remove a bird nest from my chimney?

Yes, most sweeps offer bird nest removal for £75 to £150. However, nests are legally protected during breeding season (March to August), so removal cannot happen then. After the season ends, a sweep can clear the nest and fit a bird guard (£65 to £140) to prevent future nesting.

What is a flexible flue liner and do I need one?

A flexible flue liner is a metal tube that fits inside your existing chimney, creating a smooth, protected flue for modern heating appliances. You may need one if your chimney is cracked, misaligned, or incompatible with your current appliance. Installation costs £845 to £2070 depending on flue length and access.

Are sweeps in Kendal insured and certified?

Most professional sweeps hold public liability insurance and carry a sweeping certificate issued after each job. Ask your chosen sweep to confirm their insurance details and provide a certificate on completion. This protects you if damage occurs and proves the work was done to standard.
