Hereford Chimney Sweeping Leads the Local Reviews

Hereford Chimney Sweeping dominates the local sweep market with 132 customer reviews and a strong rating. The business has a website for easy booking and detailed service information. Other established names include Dave Valentine Chimney Sweeping, which accepts Saturday appointments, and STS Chimney & Stove, another online-listed operator. The smaller operators, Clean Sweep Chimney Services, Swept Away Chimney Services, and Sooty's Chimney Services, also serve the town and may offer more flexibility depending on your needs.

Comparing reviews is just one factor when choosing. Check whether a sweep offers the specific service you need: most can handle standard open fires and stoves, but ask about CCTV inspections, bird nest removal, or complex repairs like flue lining before you call.

Urban and Rural Coverage Across Hereford and Beyond

The six sweeps split evenly between Hereford's urban core and the surrounding rural parishes. Urban sweeps serve neighbourhoods such as Castle, Saxon Gate, and Bobblestock, while rural-based operatives cover Eardisley, Hentland, and Bacton. This spread means response times may vary, so check whether your postcode district (HR4, HR3, or HR2) is within a sweep's regular working area. Leominster, 13 miles north, has two sweeps if you're closer to that town. Ludlow and Monmouth are also within reasonable reach if local availability is limited.

  • Three sweeps based in rural areas; three in or near Hereford town
  • Coverage spans postcodes HR4, HR3, and HR2
  • Saturday appointments available from two local operators

What to Expect From a Hereford Sweep's Visit

A standard sweep removes soot and blockages from your chimney, taking roughly 30 minutes to an hour. The sweep will lay protective coverings, use rods or a rotary brush to clean the flue, and vacuum debris. Most sweeps carry insurance and provide a certificate of completion, which insurers often require. If a CCTV inspection reveals damage, cracked liners, bird nests, or tar buildup, you may need additional work such as a power sweep (£85 to £145 for heavy tar) or flue lining (£875 to £2,135 for supply and fit).

Ask whether the sweep offers smoke or draw tests (£40 to £70), which confirm proper flue function, and clarify pricing for multiple flues if you have them.

Best Time to Book Chimney Cleaning in Hereford

Book your Hereford sweep between May and August to avoid the September-to-December rush. Sweeping before you start heating in autumn keeps your system safe and efficient. Most local sweeps accept bookings several weeks in advance, so planning ahead pays off.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chimney Sweeps in Hereford

Straight answers to the questions homeowners ask before booking a sweep.

See plans
How often should I have my chimney swept?

If you use an open fire or wood burner regularly, sweep annually before the heating season. Gas fires need less frequent sweeping, typically every two years, but always follow your appliance manual. Oil-fired systems may need sweeping more often if they produce soot.

What does a CCTV chimney inspection show?

A CCTV survey reveals blockages, bird nests, cracks in the liner, tar deposits, and structural damage inside your flue. It costs £85 to £145 and gives a clear picture of whether repairs are needed before problems become dangerous.

Do I need insurance for my chimney sweep?

It is good practice to check that your chosen sweep carries public liability insurance. Many insurers require a sweep's certificate of completion after work. Ask the sweep for proof of insurance before booking.

What is a smoke test for chimneys?

A smoke or draw test confirms that your chimney pulls air efficiently and smoke exits properly. It costs £40 to £70 and helps diagnose draft problems before they lead to smoke backing into your home.

Can a sweep remove a bird nest from my chimney?

Yes, most sweeps offer bird nest removal for £80 to £155. In the UK, nests are protected during breeding season (roughly March to August), so removal may be delayed or restricted during those months. A fitted bird guard (£70 to £145) prevents future nesting.

What is the difference between a standard sweep and a power sweep?

A standard sweep uses hand rods or a manual brush. A power (rotary) sweep uses a rotating brush and suits heavy tar or stubborn deposits, costing £85 to £145. Ask whether your chimney needs it, most don't, but older wood burners may benefit.
