What to Ask Before You Book a Sweep in Southport

Before committing to any sweep, confirm they can handle your specific appliance. Open fires, wood burners, range cookers and Agas all need slightly different approaches. If you suspect a blockage or damage, ask whether they offer CCTV inspection so you understand what you're paying for.

It's also worth asking whether they provide a sweeping certificate after the job. This document proves the work was done professionally and is often needed by insurance companies or when you sell your home.

  • Clarify which appliances they service
  • Ask about CCTV inspection availability if you're unsure of your flue condition
  • Request a certificate of sweeping after the job

Best Time to Book Chimney Cleaning in Southport

How much does a chimney sweep cost in Southport?

A basic sweep of an open fire costs £55 to £85 in Southport, while wood burners or multi-fuel stoves range from £60 to £90. CCTV inspections are £85 to £140. Prices depend on the type of appliance, any blockages or damage found, and whether additional work such as repairs is needed.

How often should I have my chimney swept?

Sweep your open fireplace once a year, ideally before winter. If you use a wood burner or multi-fuel stove regularly, sweep it more often, typically two to three times a year depending on your fuel type and how much you use it. A sweep can advise on your specific situation.

What does a CCTV chimney inspection involve?

A CCTV inspection uses a camera to look inside your flue, identifying blockages, damage, cracks or bird nests without needing to dismantle anything. This costs £85 to £140 in Southport and gives you a clear picture of what repairs, if any, you need.

Do I need a sweeping certificate?

Yes. A certificate proves your chimney was professionally swept and is usually required by insurance companies. It's also helpful if you sell your home, as buyers want evidence of proper maintenance. Ask your sweep for one after the job.

What if there's a bird nest in my chimney?

Most bird nests are protected by law during breeding season, typically March to August. If you find one, wait until after the season or contact a sweep who can advise on legal removal. Outside breeding season, removal costs £75 to £150, and fitting a bird guard afterwards (£65 to £140) prevents future nests.

Can I book a chimney sweep on a Saturday in Southport?

Yes. Two of the three Southport sweeps are open Saturdays, so check their availability when you call. Booking in advance is sensible, especially during peak season from September onwards.
