Frequently Asked Questions About Chimney Sweeps in Nottingham

Straight answers to the questions homeowners ask before booking a sweep.

How often should I have my chimney swept in Nottingham?

An open fire needs sweeping at least once yearly before you light it. Wood burners and multi-fuel stoves should be swept 1 to 2 times per year depending on how much you use them, and range cookers or Agas typically need one annual sweep. Your sweep can advise based on your specific appliance and usage.

What does a CCTV chimney inspection show?

A CCTV inspection films the inside of your flue to reveal blockages, cracks, loose mortar, missing bricks, bird nests, or tar buildup. It costs £85 to £145 and gives you a clear picture of any repairs needed before they become dangerous or expensive problems.

Do I need a sweeping certificate in Nottingham?

Yes. A professional sweep should issue a certificate confirming the chimney has been cleaned and is safe to use. This certificate is important for insurance purposes and proof that you've maintained your chimney properly.

Can a chimney sweep remove a bird nest?

Yes, most sweeps offer bird nest removal for £75 to £155. However, if nesting birds are present during the breeding season (roughly March to August), the law protects them. Your sweep will advise whether removal is possible now or needs to wait until nesting ends.

What's the difference between a regular sweep and a power sweep?

A regular sweep uses hand tools and brushes. A power sweep uses rotating equipment and costs more (£85 to £145) but removes heavy tar and stubborn buildup more effectively. Your sweep will recommend it if needed based on your chimney's condition.

Should I have my wood burner serviced annually?

Yes. An annual service (£85 to £145) includes sweeping, checking the door seal, inspecting the glass, and testing draw. Regular servicing keeps your burner running safely and efficiently, and many insurers require proof of it.
