Where Devon's 67 Sweeps Are Based

Exeter leads with 9 sweeps, followed by Newton Abbot with 8 and Plymouth with 5. Ilfracombe, Cullompton, Kingsbridge, Torquay and Great Torrington each have 3 or 4. Beyond these hubs, single sweeps serve smaller towns and villages across all six council areas: Teignbridge, East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams and Plymouth. Forty sweeps work from rural locations, including those on Dartmoor, while 27 are based in or near urban areas. This spread means a market town or countryside, you're likely to find a sweep within reasonable reach.

Postcode searches work best if you know your nearest town. Sweeps based in Sidmouth, Honiton, Bideford and Tavistock cover their surrounding areas, as do those in smaller parishes such as Crediton, Bovey Tracey and Willand. Many offer Saturday appointments, so you can fit a visit around weekday work.

Beat the Rush: When to Book Your Devon Sweep

May to August is the best time to book a chimney sweep in Devon. The rush begins in September as homeowners prepare for winter heating, so sweeps become harder to reach and waits lengthen. Getting your chimney swept before the heating season protects you from blockages, improves appliance performance and gives you a formal sweeping certificate for insurance purposes. Most sweeps ask how often you burn and what fuel you use; oil and gas appliances need a sweep annually, solid fuel every year or more if you burn heavily.

If you burn wood or run a multi-fuel stove, ask about annual servicing packages; some sweeps offer them to regular customers. Request a CCTV inspection if you suspect a problem or haven't had one recently, it costs £90 to £155 and shows exactly what's happening inside your flue.

Best Time to Book Chimney Cleaning in Devon

Book your Devon chimney sweep between May and August to beat the autumn rush. September onwards becomes busy as households gear up for winter heating, so sweeps book further out and availability drops. A pre-season sweep before you start burning fuel or run your heating saves hassle and protects your insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chimney Sweeps in Devon

Straight answers to the questions homeowners ask before booking a sweep.

See plans

How often should I sweep my chimney?

Oil and gas appliances need sweeping once a year. If you burn wood or solid fuel, sweep annually as a baseline, but heavy use or a smoky draw may require two or three sweeps per year. Ask your sweep to advise based on your burning habits and what they find during the initial sweep.

What does a chimney sweep cost in Devon?

A standard sweep for an open fire runs £60 to £90, or £65 to £95 for a wood burner. CCTV inspections cost £90 to £155. Larger jobs such as repointing (£305 to £1,020) or fitting a new flue liner (£920 to £2,245) are pricier. Ring a few sweeps to compare; many offer discounts for regular customers.

Do I need a sweeping certificate?

Yes. A chimney sweep certificate proves your flue was professionally swept and is safe. Your buildings insurer usually requires one, especially if you burn wood or solid fuel. Your sweep will issue it after each visit.

What is a CCTV chimney inspection?

CCTV inspection uses a camera to look inside your flue without dismantling it, revealing blockages, cracks, nesting or poor lining condition. It costs £90 to £155 and is helpful if you suspect a problem, haven't had one before, or want to know the true state of your chimney.

Can a sweep remove a bird nest from my chimney?

Yes, though timing matters. Bird nests are protected by law during breeding season (roughly March to August), so removal must wait until autumn. Outside the season, nests can be cleared for £80 to £165. Ask your sweep about bird guards or cowls (£70 to £155) to prevent future nesting.

Should I book a sweep on a Saturday?

If you need a weekend appointment, yes, 27 of Devon's 67 sweeps open on Saturdays. Check the directory listing or ring ahead to confirm availability, as Saturday slots fill quickly during the busy season.
