9 Best Chimney Sweeps in Exeter: Local Pros Compared

Open fires and wood burners should be swept at least once a year before the heating season, ideally in late summer. Gas fires need sweeping every two years. If you use a range cooker or Aga, annual sweeping is recommended. Most Exeter sweeps can advise on the right frequency for your specific appliance when you book.

A standard sweep clears soot, tar and debris from the flue using brushes and rods. A CCTV inspection uses a camera to view the inside of your chimney, spotting cracks, blockages, bird nests or structural problems that brushing alone might miss. Many sweeps offer both services; inspections typically cost £90 to £155 and help catch problems early.

Yes. A professional sweep will issue a certificate confirming the work, which you should keep for your records. This certificate is important for insurance purposes and shows the chimney was safe to use at the time of sweeping. Your sweep will explain what the certificate covers.

Bird nests are protected by law during breeding season, so removal may be delayed until autumn. Sweeps charge £80 to £165 for nest removal and often fit a bird guard or cowl (£70 to £155) to prevent future nesting. Contact a local sweep to discuss the best timing for your situation.

Seven of Exeter's nine sweeps have websites, making online booking or inquiry straightforward. Most also respond to phone calls or messages. Saturday availability is offered by five sweeps, so if weekday appointments don't suit, check their booking pages or call to arrange a weekend slot.

A smoke test (£40 to £70) checks whether your chimney is drawing properly and there are no leaks. The sweep introduces non-toxic smoke into the flue and watches where it exits, confirming the chimney functions correctly. It's useful after repairs or if you've noticed smoke backing into the room.
